$10,000 to Access Books for Education, Food + Stimulating small business economy

Updated: May 31, 2020

We've partnered with Access Books and the Book Foundation, two Los Angeles based nonprofits, to provide quality books to public schools, community libraries and organizations where the majority of students are vulnerable, under-resourced and live at or below the poverty line.

As a result of COVID 19, school and library closures, children in vulnerable communities have little, if anything to read. We see the damaging effect of the staggering statistic of 1 book per every 300 children in low-income neighborhoods playing out in real time.

Books are an essential lifeline for students. Not only are they important for academic growth, they are vital for emotional well-being. For the past months during the COVID-19 pandemic, Access Books has been flooded with requests for books from many organizations and schools and have already distributed over 27,000 books so far.

Access Book's mission is to provide quality books to public school and community libraries where the majority of students live at or below the poverty line. Since 1999, with the help of volunteers, they've refurbished over 300 libraries and donated more than 1.7 million books. Our $10,000 grant will help Access Books and the Book Foundation provide 3,000 books to 1,000 students in Compton, CA. In addition to the books, we've also partnered with local business, Pizza 900, as well as the Compton School Distrcit to provide personal pizzas to each of the students receiving books both stimulating the local economy and providing meals to the students.
