ORANGE, NJ — Orange Preparatory Academy of Inquiry & Innovation proudly celebrated its Class of 2025 during two moving-up ceremonies held in the school’s auditorium. A total of 387 eighth-grade scholars were recognized for their achievements and advancement to the next grade, marking another milestone moment in the school’s history.
With excitement and heartfelt reflection, the graduates crossed the stage not only as students but as the defining class of a growing legacy at Orange Preparatory Academy of Inquiry and Innovation. The Class of 2025 represents the school’s commitment to advanced technology education, AI innovation, and excellence in public education.
Superintendent of Schools Dr. Gerald Fitzhugh, II delivered an energizing message to the graduates, urging them to fully embrace their accomplishments: “This is truly a moment to get loud and proud! As Superintendent of Orange Township Public School District, I am incredibly proud to congratulate the Orange Preparatory Academy of Inquiry and Innovation Grade 8 Class of 2025. Your perseverance, curiosity, and dedication to learning have truly set you apart. This important milestone is a testament to your hard work and the support of your teachers, families, and community. As you prepare to take the next steps in your academic journey, remember that you have the skills and strength to overcome challenges and achieve greatness. Continue to be bold, stay curious, and lead with integrity. Congratulations, Class of 2025 the future is bright because of you!” he declared, as students and families applauded with enthusiasm.
Adding to the excitement, students and families were stunned by a surprise guest, Colin Kaepernick, who served as the ceremony’s special keynote speaker. Kaepernick, a globally recognized athlete, social justice activist and entrepreneur, delivered a message centered on courage, purpose, and the power of pursuing their future now.
The connection between Kaepernick’s message and the students’ academic journey is especially meaningful. Throughout the school year, Orange Preparatory Academy of Inquiry and Innovation students used Lumi AI technology daily in their social studies classes to become digital creators, developing and publishing their own stories with the software.
This partnership was further elevated by Orange Preparatory Academy’s designation as a Verizon Innovative Learning School (VILS) through the Verizon Digital Promise partnership.
Through this program, the school has significantly expanded student access to research tools, emerging technologies, and digital innovation. The integration of platforms like Lumi, an
AI-powered storytelling and learning tool, has allowed both teachers and students to explore real-world applications of artificial intelligence in their academic work. By leveraging these resources, the school has advanced its mission to prepare students for the future of learning, leadership, and innovation.
This deep engagement with the Lumi AI program made Kaepernick’s visit and message both timely and personal.
Orange Preparatory Academy Principal, Carrie J. Halstead, shared “I am so proud of each and every one of you for your hard work, resilience, and dedication throughout this important chapter of your academic journey. You have grown not only as students but as leaders and innovators, ready to take on new challenges with confidence and curiosity. Remember, this is just the beginning, I need for you to keep striving, keep dreaming, and never forget the power of your voice and your vision. Congratulations, Class of 2025! Your future is bright, and I can’t wait to see all that you will achieve.”
On this same day Mayor Warren presented a proclamation to Mr. Kaepernick that June 24th would henceforth be designated “Colin Kaepernick Day” in the township of Orange, NJ. He also lauded the graduating middle schoolers, saying “As Mayor of Orange Township, it is my great honor to congratulate the Orange Preparatory Academy of Inquiry and Innovation Grade 8 Class of 2025.
