Know Your Rights Camp 2025 Wrapped

ree

2025, Know Your Rights Camp continued its mission to uplift Black and Brown communities through education and empowerment that inspire the next generation of leaders. KYRC hosted transformative Camps in St. Louis, Los Angeles, and Oakland, empowering youth with knowledge around legal rights, financial education, and wellness. These experiences were strengthened by powerful guest speakers, including our founders, @nessnitty and @kaepernick7. At our St. Louis Camp, we welcomed Toni Taylor, the mother of Cary Ball Jr., and Michael Brown Sr., the father of Michael Brown Jr. At our Oakland Camp, we were deeply honored to have Dr. Angela Davis join us for a fireside chat. We also welcomed special guests Gwen Woods, the mother of Mario Woods, and Wanda Johnson, the mother of Oscar Grant, who were in attendance at the camp.

This year, our Autopsy Initiative marked its fourth anniversary. After conducting more than 125 secondary, free independent autopsies, we helped families seek answers and a measure of closure following in-custody deaths connected to police contact or incarceration. We also expanded our scope to include cases involving ICE encounters and detention, recognizing the growing need for accountability in these spaces.

At the top of 2025, we updated the KYRC app with a new state-by-state guide for immigration rights. This update includes guidance on what to do when approached at work or at home, along with practical best practices. Available in both English, Spanish, and French, the app is designed to support migrants navigating challenges with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), further establishing it as a trusted source of clarity during critical moments.

We also launched our in-studio KYRC Podcast, co-hosted by civil rights attorney Amir Whitaker and protest legal monitor Diana Barbadillo. Each episode explored issues impacting Black and Brown communities, including health care, reparations, the military industrial complex, immigration, and more.

As we move toward our anniversary in 2026, KYRC remains committed to building a world where equity, justice, and opportunity are realities for all.
