At the Know Your Rights Camp, educator and cultural consultant Ernest Crim III delivered a powerful reminder: Black history is not optional knowledge, it is a tool for liberation. Speaking with urgency and conviction, Crim explained how understanding historical narratives can quite literally save lives. Drawing from his own experiences and the principles of the Black Panther Party, he showed young people that history is more than dates and names, it is a roadmap for survival, pride, and leadership.
Crim challenged youth to think critically about what they are and aren’t taught in school. He asked them to consider why they can often name multiple U.S. presidents, yet struggle to identify influential Black leaders. That question sparked a moment of realization in one young participant, highlighting the power of curiosity and self-education.
