What a momentous day at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse! After 28 years and 10 months of wrongful imprisonment, Robert Johnson is finally, officially, a free and innocent man. The joyful cheers that erupted in the courthouse on Tuesday were a beautiful departure from its usual somber atmosphere, as supporters celebrated the formal dropping of murder charges against Johnson, who was just 16 years old when he was wrongly accused.
The relief in Johnson's own words is palpable and deeply moving. "The court has finally recognized I'm innocent. I've been saying that for 28 years and 10 months," he shared. He described the moment beautifully, saying it "felt like a building was being removed from my shoulders, felt like that wait is finally over with." After nearly three decades of maintaining his innocence, vindication has finally arrived.
Johnson's attorney, Lauren Myerscough-Mueller, highlighted the tragic circumstances of his original arrest, noting that on the day in question, "He was home with his grandma. He was helping grandma, like he always was." A teenager doing nothing more than caring for his family was robbed of his youth and adulthood.
At the heart of this celebration stands Johnson's remarkable 93-year-old grandmother, Mary Robinson, whose unwavering faith helped sustain him through the darkest years. "I've been praying and praying and praying," she said. "I know he was going to do it, but I didn't know when." What a blessing that grandmother and grandson were recently able to celebrate her 93rd birthday together, a moment decades in the making.
Looking ahead, Johnson's optimism shines brightly. He plans to get his driver's license, find work, and, most inspiringly, mentor young people, encouraging them to "appreciate their freedom and make good choices with that time they have." After everything taken from him, Johnson is choosing to give back.
Today, we celebrate Robert Johnson's freedom, his family's enduring love, and the triumph of truth. Welcome home, Mr. Johnson. Your new chapter begins now.
