NiJaree Canady Becomes College Softball's First Million-Dollar Player

NiJaree Canady's transfer from Stanford to Texas Tech in July 2024 sent shockwaves through college sports. The USA Softball National Player of the Year left a top-tier program to join a school with no conference titles and less than 50% win history, but with a historic $1,050,024 NIL deal — the most lucrative in softball history. "We're talking about a once-in-a-generation player," said Texas Tech coach Gerry Glasco, who was instrumental in her recruitment, even enlisting quarterback Patrick Mahomes to help. The Matador Club's boosters, Tracy and John Sellers, long-time supporters of Tech softball, backed the investment: "She is a wonderful human being," said Tracy. "She worked so hard to be the No. 1 pitcher in the country."

Despite speculation that money was her sole motivation, Canady emphasized her decision was rooted in trust and opportunity. "If I didn't feel like Coach Glasco was an amazing coach...I wouldn't have come," she said. Glasco, known for his offensive acumen and emotional connection to athletes, won her over by highlighting her potential as a two-way player. After limited chances to hit at Stanford, Canady embraced Glasco's vision to let her shine at the plate and in the circle.

The results speak for themselves: Canady led the Red Raiders to their first-ever Big 12 regular-season and tournament titles, going 26-5 with a nation-leading 0.90 ERA. She was named Big 12 Pitcher of the Year and helped secure Tech's first Women's College World Series win. Her presence has energized Lubbock, where she feels more at home than she did in Palo Alto. "Lubbock reminds me more of home," she said. "Sports matter here."

Beyond the wins and accolades, Canady hopes her deal helps normalize high-value NIL contracts for women. "I hope someone tomorrow comes in and builds it even more," she said. With plans to coach and open training facilities, Canady's future impact on the sport seems just as promising off the field. As Tracy Sellers put it, "She's a celebrity in Lubbock, Texas... I really hope that story gets out about her."
