Outrage is mounting in Beachwood, Ohio, after a man reportedly checked out 100 books from the Beachwood Branch of the Cuyahoga County Public Library (CCPL) and burned them, according to State Sen. Kent Smith (D-Euclid). The books, focused on Jewish history, African American history, and LGBTQ+ education, were destroyed, and a video of the act was posted online. CCPL declined to comment on the ongoing investigation, but local leaders and community groups have quickly responded.
On Monday, Heights Christian Church, known for its inclusive stance, hosted an action and press conference in partnership with the Interfaith Group Against Hate (IGAH) to denounce the incident. The church describes itself as “open to and affirming of all people, celebrating and finding strength in our diversity + affirming the dignity + worth of every person.” The IGAH announced plans to support libraries through partnerships with local bookstores, community readings, and discussions aimed at promoting diversity and free speech.
Ohio State Senator Kent Smith, who represents the area, released a strongly worded statement on May 9, condemning the act. “I condemn this act, not only because it is a crime against our institutions and community, but also because it is fundamentally un-American,” he said. Smith emphasized the critical role of libraries as “community-based safe harbors of free thought” and warned that this type of action cannot be tolerated. He described the burning as “a violation of the marketplace of ideas that is a bedrock principle of American life” and declared, “There is no place for such hate, censorship, or intimidation in Beachwood, nor this country.”
As the investigation continues, local leaders and organizations are calling for unity and a renewed commitment to protecting the diversity of ideas and perspectives that libraries represent.
