Los Angeles Honors Malcolm X With Street Named After Him

Los Angeles honored the legacy of Malcolm X by unveiling street signs for Malcolm X Way in Leimert Park on Saturday, coinciding with what would have been the civil rights icon's 100th birthday. The dedication came during the 33rd Malcolm X Festival, themed "Human Rights, By Any Means Necessary," a nod to his enduring influence on global struggles for freedom and equality.

"He was a truth-teller, unafraid to speak uncomfortable truths, and his words ignited the Black power movement," said L.A. City Councilmember Heather Hutt during the ceremony. "His dedication to human rights transcends borders, connecting the American struggle to the global movements for social justice."

The new Malcolm X Way spans a five-mile stretch of Crenshaw Boulevard, a significant addition to a neighborhood long recognized as a cultural hub for Black Americans in Los Angeles. Leimert Park has been a vital center for Black art, music, and political thought for decades, serving as a gathering place for artists, musicians, and activists committed to preserving and celebrating Black culture. Known for its vibrant arts scene, the area has fostered legendary creatives and has been central to movements for racial justice in the city.
