Know Your Rights Camp | Bronx 2026

Nearly a decade ago, the second Know Your Rights Camp found its natural home in Harlem’s historic Audubon Ballroom, now the Malcolm X & Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial and Educational Center.

Now, returning to NYC, we brought our 17th Camp to the Bronx campus of DREAM, a network of free PreK-12 charter schools that began in 1991 as a volunteer-run little league on an abandoned lot and now boasts a 95% high school graduation rate. It was a day of learning, empowerment, fellowship, and love.

The day began with an introduction by KYRC co-founders Colin Kaepernick and Nessa. What followed were heart-shifting, transformative sessions:

  • Ernest Crim III | Historian/ Educator  |  Black History

  • Tanya L. Martinez-Gallinucci | Executive Director of the New York City Bar Association's Office for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging  |  Legal Rights

  • Brandan “Bmike” Odums |  Artist and the founder and creative director of Studio BE  |  Art and Activism

  • Shakor J. Jukes, CPA |  Senior Accountant at Amazon  | Financial Literacy

  • Abran Maldonado |  OpenAI Ambassador and Co-Founder of Create Labs  | AI’s Impact on Their Communities

  • Dr. Khalya Hopkins | Special Education Instructional Coach & Administrator  NYC Department of Education  | Education Advocacy

  • Ivelyse Andino | Founder & CEO of Radical Health,  | Health and Wellness

Between sessions, campers enjoyed three healthy meals, giveaways, and vital resources. They left with backpacks of school supplies; books including The Autobiography of Malcolm X, Abolition for the People, and our co-founder Colin Kaepernick’s #1 New York Times bestseller, The Perilous Fight; and Ben & Jerry’s Change the Whirl ice cream.

None of it would have been possible without our dedicated staff and volunteers. Malcolm X taught that the future belongs to those who prepare for it today, and in the Bronx, more than 300 young people spent the day preparing to build it.
