ICE Agent Shoots Man Who Wasn’t the Target of an Arrest in Marble Hill

On Thursday afternoon, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent shot a man in New York City’s Marble Hill neighborhood. He was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Law enforcement sources told CBS News that agents were attempting to arrest someone else when a man who was not the target was shot. DHS disputes that, saying the man was the target of a planned operation.

A gray vehicle sat in the middle of the road with a bullet hole in its windshield. Mayor Zohran Mamdani said, based on early reports, that agents surrounded the man and a 5-year-old child in his car before firing “multiple rounds.” The child is believed to be physically unharmed, but the episode raises a serious question about why federal agents would fire into an occupied vehicle on a city street.

In the aftermath, neighbors gathered and tried to block an ICE vehicle from leaving the scene. Video posted by Status Coup appears to show the vehicle driving through the crowd. The footage has not been independently confirmed. If it holds up, ICE answered a frightened community with more force instead of de-escalating a situation its own agent had created.

DHS said ICE officers were conducting a targeted operation, that an officer discharged his weapon, and that officers rendered aid. It cited a prior grand larceny conviction and prior arrests for assault, robbery, and drug and weapons possession. DHS did not say what prompted the officer to fire, and it did not address the reports of a child in the car. A criminal record, whatever it shows, does not explain firing into an occupied vehicle.

City and state leaders demanded answers. Mamdani said he has called President Trump and will demand an end to ICE operations in the city. Gov. Kathy Hochul said New Yorkers “deserve to know exactly what happened and why,” and called for a full and transparent accounting from federal authorities. City Council Speaker Julie Menin said she was deeply concerned, pointing to the “immense fear” ICE’s actions have caused immigrant New Yorkers and warning that the shooting could add anxiety and uncertainty across the city.

The Marble Hill shooting is not an isolated case. CBS News counts at least 30 shootings involving DHS officers during the second Trump administration, some of them deadly. In our view, a pattern of agents firing during immigration operations, now with a child reportedly in the car, points to a federal campaign operating with too little restraint and too little oversight. Until a full and transparent investigation is complete, New Yorkers have good reason to question whether these operations make their streets safer or more dangerous.
