A biopic titled "Daddy Changed the World" about George Floyd is being developed by Radar Pictures, 8 Queens Film & Media Productions, and Night Fox Entertainment. Floyd's daughter, Gianna, and her mother, Roxie Washington, are executive producers. Gregory R. Anderson will write the screenplay, which will highlight Floyd's life and his impact following his murder in 2020, which sparked global protests against racial injustice.
Washington said in a statement, "We are excited the world will see the real, jovial, and loving George we know. This film will humanize him, embody the essence of his life, and hopefully reignite efforts to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. It's time for justice and equality for all."
The film, which is still searching for a director, will be produced by Ted Field, Dr. Kaeita Rankin, and Timothy Christian. It aims to portray Floyd as a flawed but loving father whose death changed the world, emphasizing the community's struggle and the history-altering events surrounding his death.
George Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man, was killed on May 25, 2020, when Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck for over nine minutes. Floyd's death, while handcuffed, led to widespread protests. Chauvin was convicted of multiple charges in 2021 and sentenced to over 20 years in prison in 2022. Three other officers were also convicted for violating Floyd's civil rights.
"The killing of George Floyd was a tragic, shameful moment in our nation's history," Night Fox's Christian added in a statement. "His story, while painful, deserves to be told and I'm grateful to be a part of it."
Washington hopes the film will ensure no other child loses a parent like Gianna did and inspire continued efforts for justice and equality. Rankin and Christian emphasize the film's role in highlighting injustices and inspiring change.
